Starting your own company is an opportunity to set new policies in place that may be different from your old job. After 27 years working for a large search firm, I am happy to do away with contests for days off around holidays, which when the goal is met comes the inevitable, “You have earned the day off, but let your conscience by your guide” email from management. We were all commissioned sales folks, we know if we should take the time off or not!
A Sacred Cow in our office was a policy or procedure that has become ubiquitous and so ingrained with the culture that it could not and probably should not be eliminated. Ringing a bell when a recruiter makes a placement is one great example. Another example is taking Friday afternoon off when you make a placement that week. When an Executive Recruiter makes two placements in a month, that is a good month, two placements in a week is a rare occasion, but somehow, this week I pulled it off. So, since the weather is clear, sunny and 80% in South Carolina where I live I am hitting the beach this afternoon!
I would love to hear other peoples versions of their “Sacred Cows”!
